On a vibrant Saturday, February 22, 2025, the prestigious Oman Across Ages Museum in Manah became the epicenter for celebrating Omani architectural heritage. The event marked the culmination of an inspiring initiative focused on reviving the traditional architecture and innovation within design practices specific to Oman. Organized by the Office of His Highness Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said, this initiative spanned from February 19 to February 22, aligning with the ethos of national identity preservation.
Exploring Architectural Revival Through Interactive Initiatives
The Architecture Revival Initiative is a continuation of Oman’s dedication to its architectural roots, highlighted by the Bilarab Bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design's first and second editions. Additionally, it incorporates a competition aimed at conceptualizing the Sultanate’s pavilion design for Expo 2025 Japan. The focus was on engaging various societal sectors linked with architecture in Oman, including specialists, experts, and students.
His Highness Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said personally underscored the initiative's significance as a cornerstone of national identity. Through an interactive display at the museum, attendees gained insights into the architectural milestones achieved through the Bilarab Award for Architectural Design and explored projects winning the design competition for Oman’s Expo 2025 pavilion.
Highlighting Innovative Architectural Designs
The first edition of the award sought innovative designs for a site located in Hayy Al Mina, Muttrah. This area spans 7,500 sq. meters, nestled between the seafront and the bustling Muttrah Fish Market. The second edition introduced a creative challenge to design Oman’s pavilion at Expo 2025 Japan. A standout team comprising Bayan bint Masalam Al Ramadani; Ammar Abudulhamid Al Kiyomi; and Nairah bint Khamis Al Hinai emerged victorious by integrating the traditional concept of Omani falajs into their design.
Engaging Experience and Future Prospects
Visitors were treated to a video presentation that narrated the journey of Oman’s architectural evolution, including the announcement of the third edition of the Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design slated for the end of the year. This interactive experience emphasized three key pillars: celebrating Omani architectural expressions and its revitalization, honoring prominent figures such as Honourable Lady Sayyida Ahad bint Abdullah Al Busaidi and His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, and inspiring future generations.
The Architecture Revival Initiative at Oman Across Ages Museum not only showcased the rich tapestry of Omani architecture but also set a precedent for celebrating cultural heritage through innovation.
