On February 16, 2025, the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Oman, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), unveiled a pivotal initiative to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The launch took place at the Mercure Hotel in Muscat and marked the commencement of both the National Survey for Non-Communicable Diseases and an intensive training program. This significant event was graced by HH Sayyida Dr. Mona Fahd Al Said, Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Cooperation at Sultan Qaboos University and Chair of the National Committee for the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases.
Addressing a Growing Health Challenge
Dr. Ahmed Salem Al Mandhari, MOH Undersecretary for Planning and Health Regulation, underscored the survey's critical role in collecting accurate data to inform public health strategies. He highlighted that NCDs are responsible for 80% of deaths in Oman and impose an economic burden of RO 1 billion annually. With over 6,500 new diabetes cases, more than 2,000 cancer diagnoses yearly, one in three individuals suffering from high blood pressure, and a staggering 66% of the population being overweight or obese, Oman faces a significant health challenge.
A Vision for Healthier Lives
Oman Vision 2040 prioritizes health with an aim to build a sustainable healthcare system that emphasizes prevention and effective management of NCDs. The Sultanate's healthcare system is adapting through early screening programs, tobacco control strategies, and promoting physical activity and healthy nutrition.
Gathering Crucial Data for Actionable Insights
The STEPS survey will focus on key behavioral risk factors, such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, and unhealthy diets. It will also measure biological risks like overweight, obesity, high blood pressure, and elevated blood sugar levels. Dr. Jan Jabbour, WHO Representative in Oman, emphasized the significance of this comprehensive approach to understand health behaviors and conditions within society.
Tackling Rising Trends with Targeted Interventions
The 2017 STEPS survey revealed concerning trends, including a rise in overweight and obesity rates and physical inactivity. These findings underline the necessity for interventions tailored to promote healthy lifestyles and mitigate NCD risk factors.
Launching a Nationwide Health Initiative
Starting December 29, 2024, the first phase of the national survey updated household lists across Oman's governorates to select random samples for participation. The second phase is set for April, lasting three months, during which data will be collected from health questionnaires and clinical measurements.
The launch was followed by a five-day training program designed to equip 165 field teams with skills to conduct the survey in line with international standards. This includes a pilot study as part of its practical component before beginning the full-scale field survey.
This national initiative represents Oman's commitment to enhancing public health and addressing the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases through strategic data collection and evidence-based policymaking.
