Muscat’s Green Walkway: A New Destination for Sustainable Urban Living

Muscat Municipality recently unveiled the new Green Walkway project in South Al Maabelah, Wilayat of Seeb, setting a remarkable milestone in Oman’s drive towards sustainable urban development. Under the patronage of His Excellency Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, the event was attended by an array of dignitaries, including His Excellency Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Hamidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, and Mr Stephen L. Lover, President and General Manager of Occidental Oman.

Spanning over 152,000 square metres, the Green Walkway was developed in partnership with Occidental Oman as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts. Designed to meet diverse community needs, the project goes beyond a simple park by offering:

• A dedicated sports walkway and a bicycle track, each stretching 3,400 metres
• Pedestrian overpasses for easy and safe access
• Children’s play areas, fitness equipment, multipurpose sports courts, and a skateboarding zone
• Lush green spaces, restaurants, cafes, rest areas, and designated spaces for food trucks

Speaking at the launch, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Hamidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, emphasized the importance of sustainable facilities that enhance quality of life and meet the governorate’s development goals. He highlighted that the Green Walkway not only supports public health and recreation but also adds an aesthetic dimension to Muscat’s urban landscape.

Stephen L. Lover, President and General Manager of Occidental Oman, underscored the company’s commitment to environmentally conscious projects, noting that this walkway aligns perfectly with Oman Vision 2040’s focus on sustainability and healthy living.

This modern leisure destination reflects Muscat Municipality’s broader mission to shape a “Sustainable, Thriving, and Vibrant Muscat.” By collaborating with public and private stakeholders, the municipality aims to implement high-quality, inclusive projects that enrich the community, boost tourism, and contribute to national priorities.
