In a decisive move, Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has taken a firm stance against the assault on United Nations peacekeepers. On February 15, 2025, he condemned the attack on a UNIFIL convoy and pledged swift justice for those responsible.

Immediate Actions Promised by Lebanon's PM

Following the shocking incident that injured a senior UNIFIL officer, Nawaf Salam engaged in urgent discussions with key figures at the United Nations. A phone call was made to Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, and Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro, Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL.

Ensuring Accountability and Justice

Prime Minister Nawaf directed the Lebanese interior minister to launch an immediate investigation into the attack. His instructions included identifying the attackers, ensuring their arrest, and referring them for judicial proceedings, showcasing Lebanon's commitment to upholding international law and supporting peacekeeping missions.

UNIFIL's Strong Response

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has condemned this violation as a potential war crime. In response, they have reiterated their mission to maintain security and stability in south Lebanon, aligning with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Despite the attack, UNIFIL remains dedicated to its peacekeeping duties.

The international community is closely watching Lebanon's steps towards ensuring such acts do not go unpunished, as these attacks threaten global peace efforts.
